This article presents an applied feasibility study for “Energy Load Management” (LM) in the industrial sector served by the Empresa Eléctrica Regional Centro Sur C.A.- CENTROSUR (The South Central Regional Electric Utility) in the city of Cuenca. For this purpose, the Cartones Nacionales S.A. industry, – CARTOPEL (National Cardboard Industry) has been used as a pilot project.
The analysis begins with the characterization of the production process and the determination of the factory load distribution. Then, by using measurement statistics, the industry’s daily electrical power consumption is determined along with the load that can be managed. Such results allow for an economic assessment on what CARTOPEL could save on its electricity supply costs, as well as the economic impact of load management on the utility’s load pattern.
To conclude, the current Regulations in Ecuador, related to the subject of efficient energy use and energy reduction for industrial clients, are reviewed and analysed in order to evaluate the calculation methods and results when applied to CENTROSUR. Based on this information, some modifications and characteristics, for a load management in the industrial sector Regulation, are proposed.
