One of the historical operation tasks of electric power distribution systems has been to guarantee electric power supply quality and continuity. The trend in recent years has been to provide distribution networks with “smart” protection and switching equipment, which works in an automated and isolated manner. The Control Centres, with their components such as SCADA, have been another pillar of Operation Optimization. Currently, with the support of new Information and Telecommunications Technology, the new and almost compulsory step is to combine these tools into a single Distribution Operation instrument. Such integration might not be easy. Factors such as protection and switching equipment location, available control and supervision systems, and telecommunications development, all influence the adoption of the most appropriate solution. This means that the reality of each Electric Power System strongly influences the control and automation platform for such networks. The solution proposed in this paper acts as a guideline for application in the majority of current situations. The success story of one of the Ecuador’s distribution companies confirms this premise.
