Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate regulations related to alarm system use and management, in order to perform a comparison with the CENACE’s EMS alarm system. Regulations EEMUA 191 and ANSI/ISA-18.2 recommend methodologies for alarm management and provide referential performance indexes. In order to calculate such indexes, a statistical analysis of CENACE alarms was performed over a period of 30 days and upon comparison with recommended indexes, it was determined that the CENACE’s EMS alarms were not within the aforementioned recommended limits. Therefore, certain suggestions were proposed for reducing the number of deployed alarms and thus meet the good engineering practices recommended by the referenced regulations.
