Abstract
Conventional state estimation algorithms are based on the assumption that the parameters of the lines and transformers (resistance, reactance, transformers taps, etc.) and the state of the switching devices do not have errors. In reality, these parameters are not known with certainty. Errors in the branch impedance are less visible compared to switching status errors, and they may result in errors and biases in the state estimation results that persist for long periods of time. Errors in the system parameters can have an effect on estimation similar to those produced by errors in measurements. This paper describes a method to identify parameter errors using a Lagrange multiplier algorithm. This algorithm is applied to case studies in different conditions of demand obtained from real-time systems EMS and offline models. After identifying the network equipment that has parameter errors, alternatives are explored to correct the parameters using synchronized phasor measurement units (PMUs).
