Abstract
The street lighting is a basic need of the population. Its evolution denotes milestones in the development of new technologies. This article focuses on research and comparative analysis of the behavior of the lamps currently used in street lighting in the city of Quito, referring to the most important parameters: lighting quality, energy efficiency and environmental impact. These aspects allow establishing its potential improvement aligned with existing standards based on international and national regulations. The usage of induction lamps with basic controllers and induction lamps with smart controllers is proposed instead of discharge lamps currently used. Three possible scenarios of analysis are developed: before, during and after implementation of a project with induction lamps. In these scenarios, the expected benefits are estimated: decrease of operation and maintenance costs, reduction of power consumption, protection of environment at various scales and direct influence on preservation of health, safety and integrity of individuals.
