The inter-annual variability of the solar resource and the expected long-term production are two fundamental aspects to be considered in the feasibility study and risk assessment of an investment of a power generation project with concentrating solar power systems. This article illustrates a comparative analysis of long-term available solar resource and power production for two topologies of solar plants with typical characteristics (tower and parabolic trough) in 5 locations around the Mediterranean and North Africa, chosen within the DESERTEC concept.
To estimate the solar resource have been used 20 years (1994-2013) from satellite-derived solar data in time series of hourly basis, which have been provided by CIEMAT. This work has consisted in processing and fi ltering data for each site, running multiple simulations using the System Advisor Model SAM software version 2015.1.30 and a statistical treatment of results. It was possible to study the long-term effect of the DNI on electricity production. In this way we have checked the effect of both variables on the measure of fi nancial risk.
