The IEC 61850 standard has become the foundation for implementing automated electric substations, and it permit protection, control and measuring equipment from different manufacturers to work in the same Ethernet network. Depending on the availability required for each substation, different protection schemes and protocols are adopted for the Ethernet networks, which increase system availability.
Currently is used the RTSP protocol (Rapid Square Spanning Tree Protocol), however for substations with more bay connection, it is necessary to use new protection schemes that diminish and even eliminate periods of unavailability. In the event of a failure in one segment of the network, the PRP Protocols (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) and the HSR (High-availability Seamless Redundancy) will come into play.
This paper gives an introduction to the IEC 61850 Standard, and an analysis of the protection protocols for LAN networks used for the IED connections and switches: RSTP, PRP and HSR, and their respective comparisons, concluding selection criteria for one or the other depending on the substation design.
