Abstract

This work presents an innovative methodology for assessing the post-contingency vulnerability of electric power system (EPS) in real time. By using post-contingency electric signals recorded by phasor measurement units (PMU) as input data, the approach determines early-warning indicators about potential collapse hazards. The post-contingency vulnerability assessment considers four types of instability (transient, oscillatory, frequency and short-term voltage) and possible overloads. The proposal allows for assessing two tasks involved in the vulnerability concept: i) system security status assessment, and ii) analysis of the system’s tendency to change its conditions to a critical state. The assessment methodology is applied to the New England test system. The results highlight the comprehensive assessment scheme’s high level of effectiveness for providing early warnings about EPS cascading risk events, analysing the two tasks involved in the vulnerability concept.
