Abstract

The present investigation focused on the analysis of phase change materials. To perform the study, three nitrate salts were selected. Sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and finally sodium nitrite.

The characterization techniques used were the differential scanning calorimetry, analysis by thermogravimetry, analysis of infrared spectrometry using the Fourier transform and finally a study of the microstructure of the compounds with the scanning electron microscope.

As a result of the study, the energy storage potential of nitrates for specific applications in energy systems using renewable resources was determined. In addition, the behavior of the analyzed materials was analyzed, working together as binary and ternary compounds. Therefore, this research aims to contribute to the issue of energy storage with phase change materials, with relevant results. To this end, methodologies tested by researchers worldwide and adequate thermal characterization equipment have been used. The obtained fusion enthalpy results allow us to conclude that these materials are suitable for energy storage systems.
