Abstract
The purpose of this study is to quantity the reduction in energy consumption by implementing a variable frequency drive (VDF) to induction motors used to power centrifugal fans controlled by Damper. A three-phase induction motor of 210W, a centrifugal fan with forward-curved blades, an acrylic pipe, a Damper and two VDFs were used in this study. A baseline was established for the operating point of the three-phase motor using the speed-torque curves obtained during testing. This baseline provided means to calculate the electrical potency consumed by the three-phase engine when the air flow is regulated through the Damper. Then, the reduction in energy potency was determined by comparing the different control platforms of each VDF. Testing showed that implementing a VDF with a V/f (voltage/frequency) control platforms yields a 77% reduction in energy potency.
