Abstract

This paper presents an alternative proposal for the operators of the National Interconnected System (SNI) for monitoring frequency in real-time. The purpose is to provide the option to monitor a single frequency of SNI, named as system average frequency, which is calculated in real time from synchrophasor information of WAMS, taking into account the partition of the Ecuadorian electric power system into coherent areas and the respective influence of the inertia of each area. In this regard, first a frequency coherency analysis of a relevant event occurred in the SNI is performed. This analysis allows partitioning the system into coherent areas. For this purpose, a hybrid filtering methodology, comprised by the “smooth” function of MATLAB and empirical orthogonal functions (EOF), is firstly applied. Subsequently, the equivalent inertia of each area is determined. These equivalent inertias allow calculating the average frequency of the system by applying the concept of the frequency of the equivalent inertial center (COI). Finally, the algorithm is programmed on the WAProtector application; thereby the average frequency of the system can be used for real-time monitoring and post-operative analysis at CENACE.
