Abstract

This paper presents an integral methodology based in a multi-machine criterion for locating and tuning power system stabilizers to help improving a test system’s oscillatory problems, caused by the presence of modes with poor or negative damping. This can be achieved with the development of programmed applications in DIgSILENT PowerFactory (DPL Scripts). The methodology consists in performing a small signal stability analysis in the test system; obtaining the eigenvalues, eigenvectors and participation factors which will be used to identify the best locations for PSS placement. Afterwards, a heuristic optimizer will be used to identify the optimal parameters for each PSS in order to damp poor-damped oscillation modes.
