Abstract

Due to the development of different hydrothermal generation projects and the current problems related to the transmission network’s capacity, it comes necessary to assess the national transmission system’s reinforcements, according to the demand growth and the start-up of new generation projects. In order to fulfill its role in supplying Ecuador’s electrical power with the highest level of quality and cost-effectiveness, CENACE, along with the North American company Quanta Technology, studied the feasibility of including fast-response devices, in the transmission system, which guarantee quality and continuity in the electrical power supply.

In this study, through a stable-state contingencies analysis, a characterization of the National Interconnected System for the year of 2017 is made. This allows identifying the system’s most critical contingencies. Later on, through a dynamic analysis, it is possible to categorize the contingencies associated with voltage stability problems. Such contingencies are evaluated individually in order to determine the dynamic reactive compensation requirement in different areas of the SNI.
