Abstract
A methodology for the suitable placement of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) is presented in this paper with the aim of exploiting their usage for monitoring different electric phenomena. With this purpose, the methodology defines the studies that should be performed in an Electric Power System (SEP by its acronym in Spanish) in order to define security limits to allow a reliable and stable operation of the power system, taking into account static and dynamic observability criteria, which allow identifying elements with a high operative relevance to the system during a normal operation stage and also in the face of potentially hazardous stress conditions for the SEP, which should be monitored in real time. Thus, the suitable system buses for installing PMUs are identified in order to monitor the following phenomena: i) steady-state observability, ii) steady-state angle stability (angle difference), iii) voltage stability of transmission corridors; and, iv) oscillatory stability (dynamic observability). The proposal is applied to the IEEE 39-bus test system and the results show the benefits of the proposal.
