Abstract

This document presents a methodology for the design of an Automatic Load Shedding scheme (ALS) for electrical systems that serve oil extraction facilities. The oil field, throughout its operation life, has experienced problems in its electrical generation system, which has caused its total collapse due to low frequency. The electrical system is modeled in ETAP simulation software, including the dynamics of the generators and their control systems (automatic voltage regulators and speed regulators) considering typical parameters, the models are validated through measurements obtained from the SCADA system. Through time domain simulations, the evolution of the frequency in the face of generation loss is obtained for various operating scenarios; these scenarios are classified based on the rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). A list of load priorities for disconnection is generated. Finally, an adaptive EAC and EAC based on fixed frequency and ROCOF are proposed, whose performance is compared through dynamic simulations.
